If you have DSL or cable internet, your bit torrent program needs to be configured in your modem to allow for downloading. You can get a free bit torrent program such as Utorrent at http://www.utorrent.com/download.php and download the installation program.
Does the Usenext service use encryption?

I have subscribed to the Usenext service, and I was wondering if the packets I download from them are encrypted (using SSL for exemple). I have sent them an enquiry twice, and they dont seem to want to answer my question directly.

They brag about being more secure than everyone else, by not keeping logs, but an unencrypted communication cant possibly be secure. Anyone along the way could analyse the packets and see whats being downlaoded.

I’m not a security expert, and i dont know how to tell if its secure or not. Can anyone help?
I do understand that the contents circulating on usenet do not use any encryption, I am talking about the link between the Usenext provider and my computer. I know Giganews offers a SSL service to secure the traffic form them to the customer which is what i worry about. The traffic which would permit to identify to whose IP the copyrighted material is being sent.
Any ISP sniffing the packets going through the news port can easily identify who is downloading what, without the hassle of having to go to the physical news service provider and look at the logs.

Virgin Media usenet speed?

I have been trying to download files using grabbit on the Virgin media usenet sever (news.virginmedia.com). I used to be able to get speeds of around 800 KB/s, but now the maximum i can get is 60 KB/s. Are they capping my speeds?? The internet speed has not changed (still get high results on speedtest.net), so it is just the usenet which is slow.

Also, playing Call of duty on the PS3 online is very patchy. Does this have anything to do with it?

Do Virgin throttle certain ports at certain times of day?

I have got to say that I would NOT reccomend Virgin Media Broadband to ANYONE. The service is unreliable at best.

Does anyone have any advice on what I could do to speed things up before I phone them up and release the fury on them??!!

AntwortBot answers:

Yes they just may cap you, and they also throttle ports as well. No need to realese fury on them, do what I did, call them up , complain and demand compensation. Last year I got over £300 in compensation from them for not providing the speed i signed up for. And don’t talk to advisors, ask for managers. They will give you the compensation.

BT Home Hub and usenet?

I am getting slow download speeds using newsleecher (170 kb/s ish). I can download from websites through windows explorer at speeds of up to 650 kb/s.
My parents have the same problem, and they also have the same BT package as me with the BT home hub.
I think BT use giganews servers, so i’m sure the problem is not from their end.
for some reason when i set my laptop up i managed to download at 650 kb/s through newsleecher, then one day it just went to 170 kb/s. I don’t know if I downloaded something that changed a setting or something but I cannot get it to speed up again.
My PC however, has always only managed 170 kb/s.
Do BT throttle usenet speeds? or is there a setting in the BT Home Hub that will allow it to download at the full capacity of my line??

AntwortBot answers:

What you are seeing is burst speeds. Some comcast areas have limited newsgroup speeds while others haven’t because it consumes great amounts of bandwidth. Test your connection downloading service pack 3 for windows XP from Microsoft. IF your speed is fast the whole time, they are limiting you. If it drops down to 786, then it is burst speeds. IF you are pulling 700K/Bytes/Sec, that is a 8MBit connection which is pretty darn fast. If it is 786kbit connection, then yea, that is pretty slow.

2) If you have a premium account, you have a 25GB bandwidth limit over 3 days!!
3) It’s not very cheap, USENET offers better performance for the same price.

You can easily use USENET and Torrents for this! Torrents are very fast nowadays and USENET is always maximum speed.

AntwortBot answers:

Rapidshare is much easier to link, and torrents tend to be sort of ‘dirty.’ Also, download speeds from torrents would be incredibly varied, and the existance of leechers is just annoying. However USENET is great, but the thing is, once lots of people begin to use a certain medium, that medium will become a paid service. For example, Rapidshare actually used to be free.

Wanted: machine I can telnet to, have shell access on, host web site on, and…? (See details) Suggestions?

It has been a LONG time since I’ve done this.

I want to be able to telnet somewhere that’ll give me a Unix shell, with Pine and trn and all the basics like that, and which’ll host a web site (domain name mine). The ability to use some extras, like run a majordomo, would be nice but are not critical.

“ISPs in the area have all been “Shell access? Go away, please,” for years.”

True and they should be if they care about the security on their shared-use servers. I suggest to go with a dedicated or virtual-dedicated server. Virtual-dedicated is a new technology out there that allows the affordability of a shared server with the useability of a dedicated server. Admin access allows you to have root level access and install and run virtually anything on the server.

You just recently complained in another question here about the new “add” regarding yahoo’s email. I think you meant “new ad”, which after reviewing that link someone put in their answer, was no big deal.

Good luck venting Mister. I hope this outlet Yahoo answers makes you feel better.

It is mentioned that Lord Sriram appeared in Treta Yuga. After that came Dwpara yuga and we are currently in Kaliyuga.
Hence we have to consider the duration of each of the yuga also.
This calculation of Yuga is also made in Bhagavad Gita to get the history of bhagavad Gita.
In the Mahäbhärata (Santi-parva 348.51-52) we can trace out the history of the Gita as follows:

In the beginning of the millennium known as Treta-yuga this science of the relationship with the Supreme was delivered by Vivasvan(Sun God) to Manu. Manu, being the father of mankind, gave it to his son Maharaja Ikshvaku, the king of this earth planet and forefather of the Raghu dynasty, in which Lord Ramacandra appeared.” Therefore, Bhagavad-gétä existed in human society from the time of Maharaja Ikshvaku.

It is mentioned that duration of Kaliyuga is 432,000 years. Out of which we have crossed only about 5000 years. The duration of Dwapar yoga is 2 times kaliyuga. And that of Treta is 3 times Kaliyuga.

So Dwapar yuga started around (5000 + 864,000) years before and Treat Yuga Started (5000 + 864,000 +1,296,000) years before. So Lord Ramachandra birth was some time in that duration.

Needless to say that the software used would not be so accurate to predict that duration. And then there is an asumption that the constellation was similar to what we have today.

Before Y!A did you participate in other forums?

I was an inveterate Slashdotter, and a usenet and irc participant from the mid-90s but stuck to geeky areas until recently. How about you?

AntwortBot answers:

I’ve come a long way.

I used to post in unix-based BBS and usenets around the time it was gaining popularity. I used to be in soc.*, rec.*, sci.* newsgroups. Trolling used to be less prevalent there because our accounts were usually (I would say more often than not) tied to our university. I can say that trolling used to be subtle and leave it at that. I mainly used the BBS for fishing for information regarding colleges and courses.

A summer project in school, in Minix whetted my interest in unix-like kernels, and I joined their forum to learn some of the stuff. By the time Linux Torvalds had come up with his monolithic Linux model, I had left that forum to honor personal commitments…=P

By 1995, I had started using yahoo for its mail and chat features. Chatting was different then — there used to be an open chat forum (much like GWS now) where you could post a request to chat and anyone could ping you. I used Yahoo’s mailing feature extensively until Microsoft purchased Hotmail from Sabeer Bhatia in 1997, when I ventured to create an account and use it for many years before abandoning it completely.

Then came Y!A in 2005. A friend sent me a link to a question he had asked and that’s when I started checking it out. Then came fun in the form of R&S and then I was hooked.

I’m in some Yahoo groups and google groups (moderate some), but most are related to my classmates in school/college/university. I don’t find much time to even read, much less, contribute in them anymore.

Incidentally, I’ve never been in a social networks/dating sites. It’s more to do with my ignorance regarding them than any aversion.

Recently, I subscribed to linkedin to network with friends/co-workers to keep it completely professional.

I also used to be a member in several gamer sites but I haven’t gotten a chance to visit them in the past 3+ years.

I get a podcast from iTunes named : “Dance Department”, great house, electro and minimal mixes and dj sets. Sometimes Trance. Every week they have a special guest (obviusly a great dj ). The best chapter was when Trentemoller was the special guest.
And there are more great podcasts of electronic mixes like the Peter Luts Podcast, All Around The World Podcast……..look at iTunes Store, but change the country to Netherlands or Germany, there you’ll find more of this. It’s free.

Is rapidshare the same thing as torrents?

AntwortBot answers:

No, they are not the same.

The files that torrent’s contain are not hosting online, they are hosted on the computers that are “seeding” the torrent. Rapidshare on the other hand actually hosts the files on their servers.

“Scene” torrents are torrents that have been uploaded by official scene groups, which release pirated materiel across the globe.

You can find free torrents and usenet, but they are considered public. They will work, but will be slow. Private torrent trackers are technically free, but are very hard to get into because they require a invite to get into. Some private trackers require their users to donate money to their website in order to get an invite, some torrent invites are hard to come by, especially to the higher end sites. Usenet normally costs money.

Hope this helps.

Usenet is a collection of “newsgroups”…discussion forums, really, that dates back to 1979. Newsgroups can be read using a program called a “newsreader”, or through a web site like Google Groups or Giganews. Many ISPs and some organizations still run “news servers”, which receive messages from other servers.

Usenet is important in the history of the Internet because it’s where a lot of the original “netiquette” rules were invented. It’s also the source of a lot of historical Internet drama, like Cantor & Siegal (first mass commercial spam) and the Great Renaming.

These days, discussion has mostly moved onto the web. Usenet is mostly used as a way to distribute encoded binary files (porn & warez, mostly) away from the public eye and pretty much anonymously.

What is the origin of the use of Re: to mean ‘subject’?

I’m sure everyone has seen one or another form of it: a memo, post, or message with the obligatory ‘to’ and ‘from’ fields, followed by ‘Re:’ and then the subject of the message.

It’s much more common online (in all the forum messages, usenet posts, etc.), so I’m not even sure whether it went from the virtual world into real life, or the other way around.

I always assumed Re stood for ‘reply,’ but I’ve been doubting this, because it’s often used out of this context.

So, tell me, what does ‘re’ stand for and (if it’s something non-obvious) how did it originate?
Ah, so the popular opinion is that ‘re’ stands for regarding.
Does anyone have information about the source or origin of this usage?
